Moving to Guatemala: Why We’re Relocating to a Country Full of Beauty, Culture, and Opportunity

Discover Why Guatemala Is the Perfect Destination for Expats, Digital Nomads, and Dreamers Seeking a Fresh Start

Why Moving to Guatemala Is Worth Considering

When you hear “Guatemala,” what comes to mind? Be honest—are you picturing breathtaking volcanoes, serene lakes, and vibrant markets? Or does your mind wander to the headlines we’ve all seen, filled with uncertainty and cautionary tales?

Here’s what the headlines don’t tell you: Guatemala is one of the most breathtaking, vibrant, and culturally significant places we’ve ever experienced. It’s a country where every day feels like an adventure—where the landscapes will leave you speechless, and the people will welcome you with a warmth that’s hard to describe.

I (Chris) discovered this firsthand during my six months traveling through Guatemala in 2021. I wasn’t just passing through; I fully immersed myself in the culture. I:

  • Bartended barefoot at a surf hostel in El Paredón, running along black-sand beaches by day and swapping stories and dancing under starry skies at night.
  • Spent misty mornings watching the sunrise over Lake Atitlán, where the calm waters reflected volcanoes like a perfect mirror.
  • Wandered the cobblestone streets of Antigua, surrounded by colorful colonial buildings, bustling cafés, and a sense of history that you can feel in the air.

Now, us and Mango are heading back—not as backpackers but to set up a new chapter of our lives. Grace has never been, and I can’t wait for her to experience the things that make Guatemala so special:

  • The peaceful charm throughout.
  • The laid-back vibe of Lake Atitlán, where each village has its own personality.
  • The kind of hospitality that makes you feel like family from day one.

Is Guatemala safe to live?

Let’s talk about what might be on your mind: Like anywhere, safety comes down to location and awareness.

Here’s the truth:

  • Yes, Guatemala’s crime rate is higher than the U.S. average.
  • But in reality, some U.S. cities—like Cincinnati, St. Louis, or Baltimore—have far higher homicide rates than the areas where most expats live in Guatemala.

The key is where you go. The places we’re moving to—Antigua and Lake Atitlán—are known for their safety, vibrant expat communities, and warm local culture. In fact, many expats and digital nomads living in Guatemala will tell you they feel safer here than in certain parts of their home countries.

If you’ve ever dreamed of leaving the grind behind to embrace a life of freedom, adventure, and connection, moving to Guatemala might just be the fresh start you’ve been looking for.

Why Guatemala Is So Much More Than the Headlines

Let’s face it: Guatemala doesn’t always get the best PR. Many people associate it with danger, poverty, or instability—and while those challenges exist, they’re only part of the story.

In fact, most of the people I talk to don’t even know where Guatemala is on a map, let alone what it has to offer.

The truth is, Guatemala is a country that defies stereotypes and delivers beauty, culture, and vibrancy in ways that will surprise you.

My Personal Experience: Guatemala Changed Everything

When I first arrived in Guatemala, I didn’t know what to expect. But by the time I left, it felt like a place I could call home. Over six months, I:

  • Fell in love with the breathtaking landscapes, like the misty mornings at Lake Atitlán.

  • Discovered the rhythm of everyday life in places like Antigua, where the streets buzz with energy, yet life feels calm and unhurried.

  • Worked at a surf hostel in El Paredón, where locals and travelers shared stories, laughter, and an endless supply of fresh coconuts.

Guatemala has a way of getting under your skin—in the best way possible. Every sunrise, every market, every smile from a local made me feel like I’d found something special.

Breaking Down the Stereotypes

It’s easy to let the news shape your perceptions of a place, but the reality of living in Guatemala as an expat is far different from what you might think.

Here’s what I think makes Guatemala stand out:

Warm, welcoming communities

The locals are incredibly kind, quick to offer a smile, and eager to help—even if you only speak a little Spanish.

Deep cultural roots

From the Mayan ruins at Tikal to the intricate textiles in Chichicastenango, Guatemala is bursting with culture and history.

Unrivaled beauty:

Whether you’re hiking volcanoes, relaxing by the lake, or wandering colorful markets, there’s always something to take your breath away.

Yes, Guatemala has its challenges, but the positives far outweigh them.

Questions for You to Consider

  1. Have you ever written off a place based on what you thought you knew, only to be completely blown away when you visited?
  2. Could Guatemala be the destination that changes your perspective and inspires a new chapter of your life?

For me, the answer to both was a resounding yes

Guatemala isn’t just beautiful—it’s a place where life feels simpler, freer, and more connected. In the next section, we’ll explore exactly why it’s the perfect fit for us.

The Draw of Guatemala:
Why It’s Perfect for Us

(and Maybe for You, Too?)

Guatemala isn’t just a place we’re moving to—it’s a place that fits our values, lifestyle, and long-term goals. If you’re dreaming of freedom, financial stability, and a deeper connection to life, Guatemala might be the perfect fit for you, too.

Here’s why:

Affordable Cost of Living: Live Better for Less

One of the most attractive aspects of moving to Guatemala is how far your money goes.

Affordable Rent

In many areas you can rent a beautiful home or apartment for as little as $500–$800 per month. Compare that to cities in the U.S., where rent alone can easily surpass $1,500 for a studio apartment.

Market Hauls

For under $10, you’ll walk away from the market with armfuls of avocados, pineapples, mangoes, and more. That’s enough to make smoothie bowls, guac parties, and fruit salads every day—and still have some left over.

No Guilt for Eating Out Every Day:

Meals at local restaurants, like hearty plates of pollo asado (grilled chicken) with rice and beans, can cost as little as $3.

Throwback to 2021: Hiking Acatenango Volcano in Guatemala and catching this incredible view of Volcán de Fuego. One of the most unforgettable experiences of my travels!

This affordability doesn’t just save you money—it gives you freedom.

Personal Note:
When I was traveling Guatemala in 2021, I lived comfortably on a budget of just $30 per day. Obviously prices have went up everywhere around the world and will be looking at real-time how things cost, but we’re still looking forward to stretching our dollars even further—while still having room in the budget for adventures and indulgences.

Cultural Richness: A Nation That Feels Alive

Guatemala’s culture is a vibrant tapestry woven from centuries of history. You see it in the faces of the locals, hear it in the music at festivals, and feel it in the markets overflowing with handmade goods.

Here’s what stands out:

Mayan Heritage:

Guatemala is home to the largest Indigenous population in Central America, and Mayan culture is still very much alive here. From the ancient ruins of Tikal to the ceremonial dances in highland villages, there’s a reverence for tradition that is inspiring.

Markets Full of Color and Life:

In places like Chichicastenango, the markets are a sensory explosion of color, texture, and sound. Vendors sell everything from intricate textiles to fresh produce, with the occasional street musician adding a soundtrack to your shopping.

Community Spirit:

Life in Guatemala feels deeply connected. People genuinely look out for each other, share heartfelt stories, and take the time to celebrate the small joys of life—(and by God do they love to celebrate any and every joy).

One of my favorite memories is from a tiny village near Lake Atitlán, where I watched women weaving intricate textiles by hand. When I asked about the process, they explained how the patterns told the story of their community—something passed down through generations. It’s moments like these that remind me why Guatemala is so special.

Natural Beauty: A Playground for the Adventurous

Guatemala’s landscapes feel like something out of a dream. No matter where you go, you’re surrounded by stunning natural beauty that calls you to explore and connect with the outdoors. From lush jungles to towering volcanoes, every corner of this country offers something extraordinary—but Lake Atitlán might just be the crown jewel.

Well, it is in my book at least.

Lake Atitlán: A Place for Every Vibe

Often called one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlán is surrounded by majestic volcanoes and dotted with unique villages, each offering its own personality and charm.

  • San Marcos: Perfect for a peaceful retreat, this village is known for its yoga studios, meditation centers, and tranquil vibe. It’s the kind of place where you can relax, recharge, and take life at a slower pace.
  • San Pedro: On the other end of the spectrum, San Pedro is a bit of a party scene. It’s lively, buzzing with backpackers, and filled with bars and cafés where the music often carries late into the night.
  • Panajachel: This bustling town is a hub of activity and a gateway to the lake. You’ll find markets, restaurants, and easy access to explore the other villages by boat.

Lake Atitlán isn’t just a place you visit—it’s a place you feel. The way the volcanoes reflect on the water at sunrise, the vibrant Mayan culture in every village, and the peaceful rhythm of life here make it a destination unlike anywhere else. Whether you’re looking for adventure, community, or a bit of both, Lake Atitlán offers it all.

Volcanoes for Days: Guatemala’s Stunning Peaks

With over 30 volcanoes, Guatemala is nothing short of a hiker’s paradise. Whether you’re an experienced adventurer or someone just looking to take in some jaw-dropping views, there’s a volcano here to match your pace and thrill level.

My personal favorite: After a tough ascent, you’ll camp above the clouds and wake up to the sight of neighboring Volcán de Fuego erupting in fiery bursts. There’s nothing quite like sitting by the campfire at 12,000 feet, watching lava light up the night sky—it’s adventure at its finest.

Jungles and Waterfalls: Guatemala’s Hidden Natural Wonders Await

Guatemala’s jungles and waterfalls are nature’s playground. Explore Tikal, an ancient Mayan city surrounded by lush rainforest teeming with wildlife, or swim in the turquoise pools of Semuc Champey, a natural wonder you’ll never forget.

Hidden gems like El Paraíso and Los Amates waterfalls offer serenity and beauty off the beaten path. Whether discovering ancient ruins or cooling off in jungle cascades, Guatemala invites you to reconnect with nature in a way that’s truly unforgettable.

What All This Means for You:
Whether you’re into hiking, kayaking, or just soaking up a sunset, Guatemala’s natural beauty inspires you to get outside, slow down, and appreciate the world around you.

Why Guatemala Stands Out from Other Nomad Hubs

You’ve probably heard about places like Bali, Thailand, or Costa Rica as hotspots for expats and digital nomads. So why choose Guatemala instead? Well, after spending 3 months in Thailand last year and having been to plenty other Nomad hubs over the years…

Here’s in my opinion why Guatemala is unique:

1

Authenticity:

While some destinations feel overrun by tourism, Guatemala has managed to maintain its authentic charm. It’s a place where you can immerse yourself in the culture without feeling like a spectator.

2

Accessibility:

Flights to Guatemala are relatively inexpensive, and it’s just a few hours from the Southern U.S. cities.

3

Thriving Expat Communities:

Antigua and Lake Atitlán are home to growing expat and digital nomad communities, making it easy to find support and connections.

Guatemala isn’t just a destination; it’s a lifestyle. It’s a place where you can live affordably, connect deeply, and explore endlessly. In the next section, we’ll share why this move is part of our larger mission—and why it could be the fresh start you’re dreaming of.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your routine or dreamed of starting fresh in a place where life feels simpler and more fulfilling, Guatemala might just be the destination you’ve been searching for.

Here’s why Guatemala could be perfect for you:

Freedom to Work Anywhere:

Guatemala’s growing expat and nomad communities make working remotely a dream, whether in an Antigua café, beachside in El Paredon, or overlooking Lake Atitlán.

A Welcoming Community:

Expats in Guatemala often describe the country as having a “small-town vibe.” People look out for one another, and it’s easy to build a support network of locals and fellow travelers.

A Chance to Redefine Your Life:

What does your ideal day look like? Could it include sipping coffee made from locally grown beans, wandering through colorful markets, and ending your day with a stunning sunset?

What About Visas and Logistics for Moving to Guatemala?

When considering moving to Guatemala, questions about visas and long-term residency are common—but the good news is that the process is relatively straightforward. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Short-Term Explorers:

    • If you’re not ready to commit, no problem. U.S. citizens and most foreigners don’t need a visa for stays up to 90 days.
    • (SIDE NOTE): If you decide you want to stick around longer, just request an extension or hop over the border for a quick reset before returning.

Future Expats: Looking to make Guatemala home for the long haul? The process is decently manageable:

  • Start with a 90-day residence permit, requiring sponsorship from a Guatemalan citizen and proof of financial resources.
  • Transition to a Visa Ordinaria for six months of residence, renewable as needed.
  • After two years, you’re eligible for permanent residency—an exciting milestone!

Special Circumstances: Guatemala welcomes retirees, teachers, students, and religious workers with specific visa options tailored to their needs.

Me back in El Paredon, Guatemala, at an impromptu day rave located in the cozy Mellow Hostel. (The Driftwood Surfer will always have my heart though).

Conclusion: A Fresh Start Awaits

For us, moving to Guatemala isn’t just about changing where we live—it’s about transforming HOW we live. It’s about trading the chaos of the 9-to-5 grind for mornings spent sipping fresh Guatemalan coffee, afternoons exploring volcanoes or vibrant markets, and evenings soaking in sunsets that remind us why we made this leap in the first place.

Guatemala offers something unique:

  • Freedom: To design your life the way you’ve always dreamed.
  • Affordability: A cost of living that lets you prioritize experiences over expenses.
  • Adventure: From hiking volcanoes to exploring ancient Mayan ruins, every day has the potential to surprise you.
  • Community: Warm locals and expats who make you feel like you belong.

This is why we chose Guatemala—not just as a destination, but as the backdrop for a life that feels freer, richer, and more connected. And the best part? This kind of transformation isn’t just for us—it’s possible for anyone ready to embrace change, take that first step, and discover what this incredible country has to offer.
